DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) exists to give email domain owners the ability to protect their domain from unauthorized use, commonly known as email spoofing. Spoofing is unfortunately still a large issue,so in a battle against it, starting February 2024 some things will change. Namely, any high volume sender (sending over 5000 emails to Gmail and Yahoo addresses per day) would need to add their DMARC to their sending domain. Let's explain why and how.
Why:
Sending emails without consent, making it difficult to opt out, or sending excessive and annoying emails have always been a concern.
Many people prefer brand communication through email, but the crowded inbox poses certain risks. Gmail and Yahoo aim to protect users from malicious senders with new bulk-sender requirements that prioritize stronger authentication to prevent email spoofing. Malicious activities, including phishing, spiked 1,265% since late 2022, partly due to the use of generative AI.
Gmail and Yahoo encourage easy unsubscribing for better user control. Loopify does have an easy-to-add manage subscription pages, but also a one-click unsubscribe button in your communication (which you can activate in your email sender settings by clicking the 'high-volume sender' tickbox).
How:
There are few things to be done now, but it's of everyone's benefit for the long run.
If you are using Loopify and have already registered your own sender and domain, you should now add DMARC. Since Loopify uses Mailgun as the email sending provider, we suggest taking a look at their step-by-step guide on how to implement DMARC.
Another guide also available from the widely used MXToolBox is DMARC DNS setup: how to add DMARC at your DNS provider. You'll also find the very useful DMARC checking tool (checking DMARC records for errors) at the end, to check if you did it correctly.
Dmarcian is another poweful tool that could help you monitor your sendings to have a better understanding of your volume,.
When:
So far, Gmail has confirmed that this is taking action starting February 2024, while Yahoo also aims for the first quarter of 2024. The sooner you add the requirements - the better, as other providers are likely to follow so it's best to be ready on time.
What then:
If you've added DMARC to your domain, you no longer have worries and can continue sending at any volume. Some monitoring could always be of help.
